Educators Can Take Weekend and Evening Summer Courses Starting in May at Keene State College

KEENE, N.H. 4/27/05 - Numerous weekend and evening summer courses are offered for educators at Keene State College in May and June when teachers are still minding their own students. Eight courses are offered during the first summer session, May 16 - June 24. There are 20 institutes, most weeklong, during the second summer session, June 27 - Aug. 5.

All summer education courses and institutes provide teachers with an opportunity for professional development and offer graduate credit that can be applied to school district requirements. Here’s what is offered during the first six-week Summer Session:

The Enchanted Wood: Storytelling in the Classroom explains a variety of storytelling techniques for teachers and their students. Step-by-step instructions for a final school presentation are given and modeled at the last class meeting. This one-credit course meets Friday, June 17, from 6 to 8 p.m., Saturday, June 18, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Wednesday, June 29, from 7 to 9:30 p.m.

Building Community in the Classroom Using Cooperative Games explores a variety of games and activities that when used in the classroom builds cohesiveness, fosters respect toward individuals, promotes positive group dynamics, and helps students feel a sense of belonging within the group. This one-credit course meets Friday, June 24, from 5 to 9:30 p.m. and Saturday, June 25, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Children’s Literature Across the Curriculum explores how such literature can be used across the curriculum at the elementary and middle school levels. A visit to the home of an author/illustrator is planned. This three-credit course meets May 20 and 21, June 3, 4, 17, and 18 on Fridays from 5 to 9:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Summative Evaluation Writing for Principals provides the opportunity to write summative evaluations, critique writings, and support the group in their collective learning. This three-credit course meets May 17-June 23 on Tuesday and Thursday from 5 to 8:20 p.m.

Philosophy and Practices of Adult Education provides an overview of adult education philosophies and insights into the practice of adult education. This three-credit course meets May 20 and 21, June 3, 4, 17, and 18 on Fridays from 5 to 9:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Design and Reform of American Education explores philosophies of American education and reform movements. This three-credit course meets Monday and Wednesday, May 16-June 22, from 4:30 to 7:50 p.m.

School Effectiveness and Reform emphasizes current school reform efforts and change strategies detailing processes and procedures for program development and evaluation, and school effectiveness. This three-credit course meets Monday and Wednesday, May 16-June 22, from 4:30 to 7:50 p.m.

Introduction to School Law and Ethics gives both pre-professionals and practicing educators an opportunity to discover the policies, procedures, and laws that govern their practice. Two sections of this one-credit course are offered: June 3 and 4 or June 24 and 25, meeting on Friday from 5 to 9:30 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
