Superheroes in Pop Culture

This course explores cinema through interdisciplinary approaches that cross multiple fields of study, drawing upon academic disciplines that include literary studies, women's studies, media studies, cultural studies, and history. May be repeated as topics change. Prerequisite: 24 credits in ISP including ITW 101 and QL, or permission of instructor.

Comments: From Marvel to DC and Beyond: The Superhero in Popular Culture:This interdisciplinary course, which mixes creative and academicassignments, examines the phenomenon of superhero stories in ourpopular culture. This fully online eight-week course will blendfilm and TV viewings with readings and discussions that will lookat superheroes from many contexts including the following: Myths& archetypes; genre; history; society; culture; gender issues;and politics. We will aim to answer the question: Why do we as aculture love and need superhero stories? No prerequisites needed.By the end of the term, you will invent and present your very ownsuperhero in a final project!
