Professional Development Workshops

2024-2025 professional development workshops on Holocaust and Genocide Studies education:

Oct. 11, 2024 - Cutting Edge Curriculum: Creating Video Essays 8:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. in-person at the Cohen Center

How can video essays offer new avenues to engage with histories of genocidal violence? The first part of this skills-based workshop for educators will introduce participants to key concepts for teaching about genocide. We will then examine strategies for understanding film as a form for teaching and learning about genocide. The remainder of the workshop will be deeply interactive: teaching participants how to create videographic projects using Adobe Premiere Pro. Each participant will leave the workshop having created a short video of their own related to genocide awareness and prevention.

Breakfast, lunch, and coffee are included in the workshop. Breakfast will be available beginning at 8:30am and the workshop itself will start promptly at 9:00am. Please learn more and register here. Space is limited for this offering. The hard deadline for registration is October 3 (unless spots fill up sooner); we are not able to accept any participants into the workshop after that date.

Dec. 6, 2024 - Approaching Genocide in the Classroom: Case Studies and Seminars 8:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. in-person at the Cohen Center

Feeling overwhelmed with the task of teaching genocide in the classroom? Would you like to have a sample course progression provided to you with explanation and experience with some of the activities you can use immediately in the classroom? Join us for a day of collaboration, practical application of material, and exploration through different genocide education materials. This interactive and discussion-based workshop will be led by two NH teachers who currently teach Holocaust and Genocide Studies courses at their schools. Some of the workshop materials to be discussed include: the Pyramid of Hate, 10 Stages of Genocide, 4 Roles in an Atrocity, Maus I and Maus II. The workshop will touch on a wide range of different cases of genocide such as the Holocaust, the Armenian Genocide, the Bosnian Genocide, and the Genocide against the Tutsi (in Rwanda). Tom White from the Cohen Center will also introduce some of the resources available to educators through the Center.

Breakfast, lunch, and coffee are included in the workshop. Breakfast will be available beginning at 8:30am and the workshop itself will start promptly at 9:00am. Please learn more and register here. Jan. 10, 2025 - Enacting History: Teaching the Holocaust through Theater and Creative Media 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. online

Empathy and human connection are vital in combating human rights violations, and the formation of such skills has become an increasing area of need within our secondary classrooms. It is for this reason that resources such as Enacting History: A Practical Guide to Teaching the Holocaust through Theater exist. Enacting History is a curriculum guide that has the potential to enhance students’ understanding of the Holocaust through the synthesis of historical and theatrical resources. This workshop will not only explore the potential that resources like Enacting History have in shaping Holocaust & Genocide education but provide educators with the opportunity to discuss and explore how theatrical exercises and creative media can be incorporated into their own curriculum to enhance student learning on other historically sensitive topics. Note that Enacting History is not geared exclusively towards theater students but, rather, presents an opportunity for educators across many subjects to maximize limited classroom time with high-level engagement and participation to meet the NH standard.

This workshop will take place fully online via Zoom. Please learn more and register here. The hard deadline for registration is January 2, 2025; we are not able to accept any participants into the workshop after that date.

April 11, 2025 - Teaching the Holocaust through Local History and Sources 8:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. in person at the Cohen Center

This free workshop for educators is offered by the Cohen Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies in partnership with the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum as well as Salem State University’s Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies. Sessions will be led by skilled experts from all three institutions.

In recent years, we have seen many new teaching materials related to American responses to the Holocaust. But how did our own local communities in New Hampshire respond compared to others across the U.S.? How can we think globally and teach locally when it comes to this subject matter?

Join us for an interactive workshop on using local sources to teach the Holocaust. After introducing some key information about Americans and the Holocaust, our skilled facilitators will demonstrate a variety of open-access teaching materials such as a timeline activity, a newspaper database, and other learning activities and lessons. Participants will have the opportunity to see these resources brought to life through interactive sessions, and we will reserve ample time for discussing how materials might translate into subject areas to fulfill state frameworks and mandates. Part of our afternoon will also be spent examining the Holocaust and Genocide Studies collection in the KSC Archives with a focus on primary source literacy.

In addition to lesson plans and other curated materials, all participants who attend this workshop will receive a free copy of the book Americans and the Holocaust: A Reader by Daniel Greene and Edward Phillips.

Breakfast, lunch, and coffee are included in the workshop. Breakfast will be available beginning at 8:30am and the workshop itself will start promptly at 9:00am. Please learn more and register here. There is no cost associated with this workshop but space is limited. The hard deadline for registration is April 3, 2025 (unless spots fill up sooner); we are not able to accept any participants into the workshop after that date.
