Thorne-Sagendorph Art Gallery Exhibits Local Art Selected in Regional Competition

Opening Reception to Honor Local Artists Scheduled for January 23

Keene State College’s Thorne-Sagendorph Art Gallery will display 116 works created by artists living within 30 miles of Keene as part of its Biennial Regional Jurors’ Choice Exhibition. The pieces represent the work of 98 local artists.

The exhibition, open to artists working in all media, will be displayed January 24 to March 26, 2015. Gallery visitors are asked to vote for the People’s Choice Commendation Award to be announced on March 9. During an opening reception at the gallery on January 23 from 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm, awards, honors and cash prizes will be announced. The exhibition and opening reception are free and open to the public.

“The Monadnock Region is home to immense artistic talent. This show is one of my favorites because it provides an opportunity to showcase the richness of our region. I am grateful to all of the artists who entered the show,” said Maureen Ahern, director of the Thorne-Sagendorph Art Gallery at Keene State College.

The exhibited art was selected by Anne Zill, the competition’s designated juror. Zill is director of the Art Gallery at the University of New England (UNE), Portland Campus, where she has mounted more than 90 exhibitions in the past 16 years. At the UNE Gallery her exhibitions have ranged widely over subject matter and mediums. The current exhibition, Making a New Whole: The Art of Collage includes works by 26 artists stretching our conception of what collage encompasses and where it can take us. The upcoming show, Coyote Connections, will feature works by 31 Maine artists depicting this animal in every conceivable circumstance and medium. She has curated two exhibitions of women’s art from around the world at the United Nations, and one at UNESCO in 2011. In 2007 Zill mounted an exhibition of African women’s art at a Cape Town, South Africa Vital Voices Women’s Leadership Forum. Her traveling exhibition, Women on War has been exhibited at eight venues around the country over the past decade.
