Five Owls Receive LEC Weekly Honors
KEENE, N.H. 9/18/06 - Five Keene State athletes were recipients of Little East Conference honors announced on Monday.
Pelse Mesa (Manchester, N.H.) and Brendan Flynn (Londonderry, N.H.) were named men’s soccer offensive and defensive players of the week respectively. Molly Brunelle (Walpole, N.H.) was selected women’s soccer rookie of the week. Sara Joyce (Hampstead, N.H.) earned field hockey defensive player honors and Jennifer Adams (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) was the LEC women’s cross country runner of the week.
Mesa, a junior forward, registered 10 points, on four goals and two assists, as the Owls’ turned in a 2-0 record. He scored two markers and handed out a pair of helpers as Keene State overpowered Mass. College of Liberal Arts, 10-0. On Sunday, Mesa continued to produce in the offensive third as he posted two goals in a 3-0 conference victory at Western Connecticut. He is second in the Little East in points (12) and goals (five).
Flynn, a senior back, anchored a stifling Owls’ defense that did not surrender a single goal in two matches. Keene State leads the conference in goals against average (0.63) and shutouts (three), while limiting the opposition to just 2.33 shots per game. Flynn also contributed to the offensive rush, tallying four points, on two goals, in the victory against MCLA.
Brunelle, a freshman forward, netted a pair of goals and handed out an assist in three matches this week. She scored three points, on a marker and a helper, in a 6-1 victory over Westfield State, while registering Keene State’s lone goal against Smith College.
Joyce continued her stellar play this week with a pair of shutout victories, raising her scoreless streak to 210 minutes. The senior goalie turned back seven Western New England offerings in a 2-0 win, while making six saves in a 3-0 victory against conference foe Framingham State. Joyce is second in the conference in shutouts (2.5), third in goals against average, and fourth in saves (48).
On Saturday, Adams, a junior, covered the 5-kilometer course at the Bates Invitational with a first-place time of 19:00. The Owls’ posted a third place finish with a total of 61 points.
