Wellness Courses Offered This Fall

KEENE, N.H. 8/8/02 A healthy lifestyle is important no matter what the season. This fall the Keene State College Continuing Education Office is offering health and wellness related courses that range from Eastern healing practices to nutritional tours of Keene supermarkets.

Introduction to Eastern Healing Practices examines Eastern views of energy, the energy body, charkas, meridians, and other subtle energy structures that form the basis for acupuncture, tai chi, ayurveda, and other practices. This one-credit course meets Friday, Oct. 4 , from 5 to 9:30 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 5, from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Grief, Loss, and Healing: Counseling the Chemically Dependent Person as Grief Therapy explores the dynamics of grief and loss in the process of recovery from chemical dependency. Students learn to identify the stages of grief, from denial to full acceptance, in the counseling relationship and to help individuals move through these stages. The one-credit course meets Friday, Oct. 18, from 5 to 9:30 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 19, from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Circle of Life explores the life cycle from birth to the dying process. The course is offered through Partners in Alternative Topics in Health and Healing, associated with Plymouth State College. This residential weekend course is scheduled for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday Nov. 1, 2, and 3, at Waterville Valley ski resort. The three-credit course meets from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. for two days and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the third day.

Psychology of Sport and Exercise examines the influence of personality and social factors on behavior in a variety of sport, recreation, and exercise environments. This three-credit course meets on Tuesdays, from Aug. 27 through Dec. 10, from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Drugs and Behavior examines the psychological and biological impact of drugs including stimulants, depressant, hallucinogens, and others. The class meets on Mondays, from Aug. 26 through Dec. 9, from 6:30 to 9:20 p.m.

Supermarket Smarts provides a hands-on lesson in packing the healthiest grocery cart for your personal health needs. Nutrition professionals lead an aisle-by-aisle tour of a local supermarket to help shoppers make sense of all the confusing nutrition information on product packaging. The 2.5-hour non- credit class takes place at Shaws Supermarket or Hannaford Super Store in Keene. Morning sessions are offered at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 10, Oct. 8, and Nov. 12. Evening sessions are offered at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 11, Oct. 9, and Nov. 13. The cost is $40.
