Lucey Named to District Academic All-American Team

KEENE, N.H. 06/1/06 - Keene State College’s Breanne Lucey has been named to the District 1 College Division Women’s Track & Field/Cross Country Academic All-American team. A first team selection, Lucey will now be eligible for national Academic All-American honors.

Lucey, a Keene native, excelled on the track and in the classroom at Keene State this year. She was a two-time national champion in the 800-meters and distance medley relay indoors, and earned All-American honors in the 1,500 and 5,000 during the outdoor season. In the fall, Lucey also received All-Little East honors as a member of the KSC soccer team.

A senior majoring in elementary education/psychology, Lucey said understanding coaches and teachers helped her maintain a busy schedule. “My coaches were very accommodating when it came to practices,” she said. Academically, my professors showed interest in me and understood my situation with sports. They treated me as a person rather than see me as a number.”

In addition to playing two sports, Lucey also taught second graders at the Peterborough Elementary School during the spring.

Lucey, who was named Keene State’s female athlete of the year, plans on keeping busy this summer competing in the Monadnock Racing Series and running in track meets in the Boston area. This fall, she will continue as a two-sport Owl athlete playing soccer and running on the cross country team.

Lucey is the third KSC athlete to receive Academic All-American honors. In 1999, Scott Jensen earned national Academic All-American notoriety in cross country and Kerry Marsh was a District Academic All-American softball player in 2002.
