Facing Race and Oppression Series at Keene State College

KEENE, N.H. 3/30/06 - Dr. Kenneth Hardy will present three lectures on Monday, April 3, and Tuesday, April 4, as part of the Sidore Series event “Facing Race and Class Oppression.”

Internationally known for his work in the area of family therapy and diversity, Dr. Hardy is a professor in the department of the Marriage and Family Therapy at Syracuse University, and director of the Eikenberg Institute for Relationships in New York City, where he maintains a private practice specializing in working with traumatized and oppressed populations. He co- authored Teens Who Hurt: Clinical Interventions to Break the Cycle of Adolescent Violence, and has appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show, Dateline NBC, PBS, and 20/20.

On Monday, April 3, at 7 p.m., he will present “Diverse and Oppressed Families: It’s About All of Us” in the Mabel Brown Room of the Student Center.

The realities of class and race oppression stand in marked contrast to the realities of economic and racial privilege. Dr. Hardy will talk about how we can bridge these worlds and understand the dynamics between them.

On Tuesday, April 4, at 9 a.m., he will present “Shh… Schools, Silence, and the Subtleties of Race,” in the Mountain View Room of the Student Center.

Schools are known for providing opportunities for intellectual discourse, self-exploration, and constructive engagement, but they often mask and manage the issue of race by silence, subtleties, and disengagement.

Also on Tuesday, at 2:30 p.m., he will present “Race, Reality, and Relationships in Academia: Strategies for Conducting Effective Cross-Racial Dialogues,” in the Mountain View Room of the Student Center.

This address will examine the complex interplay between race, reality, and our relationships, both in and outside the world of academia. Strategies for conducting effective cross-racial dialogues and for promoting an authentic climate of inclusion will be discussed.

All three presentations are free and open to the public. For more information call Nancy Gitchell at 358-2503.
