KSC Percussion Performs "Music for the Theater"

KEENE, N.H. 3/15/06 - The KSC Percussion Ensemble will perform a concert of theatrically-inspired percussion pieces on Tuesday, April 4, at 7:30 p.m. in the Alumni Recital Hall of the Redfern Arts Center on Brickyard Pond. Tickets are $7 for the general public and $5 for KSC students, senior citizens, and youth age 17 and under. Call the box office at 603-358-2168.

The Percussion Ensemble, directed by faculty member Christopher Swist, will perform a concert of contemporary percussion music with theatrical elements, accented by choreography and some atypical percussive tools.

Keene State students will play drums and recorder, and also coax beats from books, music stands, and cap guns. The compositions that lend themselves to such experimental performance are by John Luther Adams, John Cage, David Macbride, Eugene Novotney, Steve Reich, Stuart Smith, and Larry Spivack.

In addition to teaching percussion at Keene State, Swist is also a composer and performs with the New Britain Symphony, Waterbury Symphony, Steel Sunrise, Drumspeak, Lehninger-Swist Duo, Dance Connecticut, and Seven Angels Theater.

The Percussion Ensemble gives music students an opportunity for public performance, which is essential to graduation from Keene State with a degree in music. For further information about the music program, call 603-358-2177.
