Three Premieres in KSC Faculty Composers Recital

KEENE, N.H. 2/22/06 - Original compositions by Keene State College music faculty will be showcased in the Fifth Annual Faculty Composers Recital at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 8, in the Alumni Recital Hall of the Redfern Arts Center on Brickyard Pond.

The Recital features original compositions by music faculty Craig Sylvern, Christopher Swist, José Lezcano, Timothy Rogers, Elaine Broad Ginsberg, and faculty emeritus William Pardus. Tickets are $7 for the general public and $5 for KSC students, senior citizens, and youth age 17 or younger. Call the box office at 603-358-2168.

Sylvern, who coordinated the recital, composed Song for Isaac for woodwind trio. In addition to composing music, Sylvern, a tenor saxophonist, is an associate professor and chairperson of the Music Department at KSC and has toured for many years with Keith Brion and his New Sousa Band.

Swist’s contribution, Duality, is a composition for violin and computer. In addition to composing, Swist teaches percussion at Keene State and performs with the New Britain Symphony, Waterbury Symphony, Steel Sunrise, Drumspeak, Lehninger-Swist Duo, Dance Connecticut, and Seven Angels Theater.

Lezcano will perform the Keene premiere of Three Goya Portraits for solo guitar. Lezcano, who was the New Hampshire Music Teachers Association’s Composer of the Year in 2002, is a professor of music at Keene State, where he received the College’s Award for Distinction in Research and Scholarship in recognition of his activities as performer, scholar, and composer.

Rogers’s Reflect in Me was composed for voice and piano. Rogers has performed at the Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, and in numerous concert venues throughout New England. He teaches privately and is a lecturer at Keene State.

Ginsberg’s Keene premiere of Z’mirah was composed for tenor saxophone and piano. She is a lecturer in the Music Department at KSC, teaching courses in Music Theory, Aural Skills courses, and History of Jewish Music.

Pardus’ The Bluegrass Sketches for brass quintet will have its Keene premiere, and features the Monadnock Brass Quintet. Pardus, faculty emeritus of music and former chairperson of the KSC Music Department, was named Composer of the Year in 2001 by the New Hampshire Music Teachers Association.
