KSC Jazz Ensemble Presents The Music Of Broadway

KEENE, N.H. 11/17/04 - The Keene State College Jazz Ensemble, directed by Don Baldini, performs a “Music of Broadway” program of hit show tunes on Wednesday, Dec. 8, at 7:30 p.m. in the Main Theatre of the Redfern Arts Center on Brickyard Pond. Tickets are $7 for the general public and $5 for KSC faculty, staff, and students; senior citizens; and youth age 17 or younger. Call the box office at 603-358-2168.

The “Music of Broadway,” featuring guest soloist Scott Mullett on tenor saxophone, will include “My Funny Valentine,” “Mack the Knife,” “When Sunny Get’s Blue,” “Steam Heat,” “My Favorite Things,” “Softly as in a Morning Sunrise,” and other songs from such Broadway hits as Three Penny Opera, Pal Joey, The Desert Song, Sophisticated Ladies, The Pajama Game, The Sound of Music, Hello, Dolly! and Chicago.

Guest soloist Scott Mullett, who last played with the Jazz Ensemble in May 1999, is a native of Keene. He was a student member of the KSC Jazz Ensemble from 1973-1976. After attending Berklee School of Music, Mullett toured with Woody Herman, Artie Shaw, and Mel Torme, and joined the national tours of Cats and 42nd Street. He has performed with Tony Bennett, Aretha Franklin, Stan Getz, Lou Rawls, Ben Vereen, Cab Calloway, and many other notable performers.

Baldini, an artist-in-residence, also conducts the KSC Chamber Orchestra, which will perform works by Schubert, Vivaldi, Grieg, and Ravel on Wednesday, Dec. 1, at 7:30 p.m. in the Redfern Arts Center. Baldini came to Keene State after a professional career as a studio musician in Los Angeles. He appeared for 13 years with the “Tonight Show” Orchestra and toured with Frank Sinatra, Johnny Mathis, Peggy Lee, and the Harry James and Toshiko Akiyoshi/Lew Tabakin bands. He currently performs with the Vermont Symphony Orchestra, the Dartmouth Symphony, Opera North, the Keene Chamber Orchestra, and several local chamber music and jazz groups. Baldini, who lives in Saxtons River, Vt., also teaches at Dartmouth College.
