Summer Registration Begins at Keene State College

KEENE, N.H. 3/14/03 - The Keene State College Continuing Education Office opens Summer Session registration on Monday, March 24. Many courses are offered in two, six-week summer sessions starting May 19 and June 30, so students can earn credits and still have time for summer activities. In addition, there is one, 12-week session starting May 19, and many one-week institutes are available throughout the summer.

Courses are offered that fulfill major and general education requirements and explore topics of special interest. Some new and interesting courses available this summer are:

History of 20th-Century American Design examines the social, scientific, and technical forces that have shaped American decorative arts by charting art nouveau, mission, modern, streamline, postwar, and postmodern styles. This art course meets on Tuesdays, May 20 to Aug. 5, from 6 to 9:20 p.m.

Introduction to the Culture of Japan introduces students to Japanese religious traditions, daily life, and history and includes some basic Japanese language and cultural etiquette useful to the traveler or businessperson. This modern language course meets Tuesdays and Thursdays, July 1 to Aug. 7, from 6 to 9:20 p.m.

A+ Certification Preparation includes two computer science courses that prepare students for the A+ test sponsored by CompTIA, which certifies the competency of entry-level service technicians. PC Hardware Fundamentals, which covers the hardware component of the A+ system, meets Tuesdays and Thursdays, May 20 to June 26, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:10 p.m. A+ Certification Preparation, which deals with the software applications, meets Tuesdays and Thursdays, May 20 to June 26, from 1:30 to 5:10 p.m.

Literature of the Open Road studies texts by Walt Whitman, Henry David Thoreau, Mark Twain, Jack Kerouac, and other authors to explore how travel serves as an emblem of self-exploration in America. This English course meets Mondays and Wednesdays, June 30 to Aug. 6, from 6 to 9 p.m.

Turkic Civilization: And the Twain Shall Meet is a response to Rudyard Kipling’s legendary verse: “East is East and West is West, and never the twain shall meet.” This 12-week course examines the considerable interaction and exchange between the two larger civilizations, which is a continuous process, mainly positive. This interdisciplinary course meets Wednesdays, May 21 to Aug. 6, from 6 to 9:20 p.m.

History of Rock and Roll studies the growth and diffusion of popular music and its surrounding culture in the 1950s and 1960s, including concurrent historical events and movements as well as trends in other arts. This music course meets Mondays and Wednesdays, June 30 to Aug. 6, from 6 to 9 p.m.

Registration continues through Wednesday, May 14, for Summer Session I and Full Summer classes. Registration remains open for Summer Session II courses through Wednesday, June 25. Registration for weekend courses and one-week institutes is open until the day the class begins. Early registration is encouraged since seats are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. You may register in person, by phone, fax, mail, or e-mail.

To register in person, visit the Continuing Education Office on the first floor of Elliot Hall on Main Street. Parking is available in the visitor parking lot on Wyman Way. The office is open 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday.
