Orchestra Plays Holiday Music on Dec. 2

KEENE, N.H. 11/16/01 - “The Nutcracker Suite” and other holiday music will be on the Keene State College Chamber Orchestra’s program on Sunday, Dec. 2. Don Baldini will conduct the 36-member orchestra during the matinee concert, which begins at 3 p.m. in the Alumni Recital Hall of the Redfern Arts Center on Brickyard Pond. Tickets are $7 for the general public and $5 for KSC students, senior citizens, and youth 17 and under. Call the box office at 603-358-2168.

“The Music for the Holidays” program will center on Peter Tchaikovsky’s suite of songs from the ballet, “The Nutcracker,” which includes such well-known melodies as the “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy” and the “Waltz of the Flowers.”

The program will veer from a Christmas theme with “A Night on Bald Mountain,” Modest Moussorgsky’s bewitching work brought to life in Walt Disney’s classic animated film “Fantasia.”

The concert also will feature Keene State faculty member José Lezcano performing a Mauro Giuliani guitar concerto and KSC senior Jung Jin Choi singing Italian opera arias.

The KSC Chamber Orchestra is composed primarily of KSC students and includes some community members. Baldini also conducts the KSC Jazz Ensemble, which will present a concert of blues and big band music on Wednesday, Dec. 5, at 7:30 p.m. in the Redfern Arts Center.

Baldini came to Keene State after a professional career as a studio musician in Los Angeles. He appeared for 13 years with The Tonight Show Orchestra and toured with Frank Sinatra, Johnny Mathis, Peggy Lee, and the Harry James and Toshiko-Akyoshi/Lew Tabakkin bands. He currently performs with the Vermont Symphony Orchestra, the Dartmouth Symphony, Opera North, the Keene Chamber Orchestra, and several local chamber music and jazz groups.
