Active Community Standards Sanctions

Alpha Sigma Phi (Fall 2023): Found responsible for (a) off-campus city code violation

As a result of the investigation and associated organizational misconduct process, Tau Kappa Epsilon has been issued the following sanctions by Keene State College:

  1. Official Warning

Conduct History (Since August 2020)

Tau Kappa Epsilon (Spring 2023): Found responsible for (a) off-campus city code violation; (b) failure to obey federal, state or local laws; (c) disorderly, disruptive or indecent conduct; (d) providing an environment for an underage person to consume alcohol

As a result of the investigation and associated organizational misconduct process, Tau Kappa Epsilon has been issued the following sanctions by Keene State College:

  1. Deferred Suspension effective April 1, 2023 through December 15, 2023.
  2. Complete a mandatory fire safety inspection with Keene Fire Department by April 2023
  3. Complete Alcohol Education as a Chapter prior to the end of Fall 2023
  4. Schedule and complete two follow-up meetings with the Office of Community Standards during the Fall Semester

Tau Kappa Epsilon (Spring/Summer 2021): Found responsible for hazing.

As a result of the investigation and associated organizational misconduct process, Tau Kappa Epsilon has been issued the following sanctions by Keene State College:

  1. Hazing Education (approved by Student Involvement) to be completed by 10/01/2022 or prior to the recruitment of a fall new member class.
  2. A College Advisor must be obtained by the start of the fall 2022 semester.
  3. Conduct Probation from 04/26/2022-12/17/2022

Phi Lambda Chi (Spring 2021): Found responsible for hazing, physical harm, and disorderly conduct.

As a result of the investigation and associated community standards process, Phi Lambda Chi has been issued the following sanctions by Keene State College:

  1. Suspension of new member recruitment effective as of May, 26 2021 through May, 9, 2022.
  2. Suspension of organization social activities effective as of May, 26 2021 through May, 9, 2022.
  3. College Probation effective May 26, 2021, through May 15, 2023.

Phi Lambda Chi is currently inactive.

Chapter Affiliation

All fraternities and sororities at Keene State College must be affiliated with a/n inter/national organization. The support provided by a/n inter/national affiliation will assist Greek chapters in their organizational development, contribute to their leadership and community opportunities, and push them to reach their personal and organizational goals.

All chapters, including new groups and those that wish to re-affiliate with the College, will follow a structured process administered by the Office of Student Involvement. Questions about this process should be directed to the Coordinator of Fraternity & Sorority Life and Student Leadership. Affiliation with a/n inter/national Greek organization will also be a requirement for any group that re-affiliates.

Some of the benefits of an affiliation with a/n inter/national organization include:

  • Being part of a larger brotherhood/sisterhood across college campuses nationwide
  • Opportunities to attend conferences on the state, regional, and national level
  • Officer manuals and other educational resources which strengthen chapter operations
  • Assistance, outreach and involvement of alumni
  • Consultation services
  • Scholarships and other financial support
  • Inter/national membership education programs and initiation rituals
  • Governance by inter/national policies and procedures regarding risk management
  • Liability and/or property coverage

Chapter and Member Development

In an effort to promote the growth of all members, fraternities & sororities should be practicing ongoing chapter and individual member development throughout the academic year. Each chapter will provide education and training of chapter members on issues of risk management, hazing, liability, and sexual harassment and assault. Keene State College may provide incentives to these organizations whose mission statements and actions encourage seriousness of academic purpose and promote a drug-free environment, encouraging members to pursue a healthful lifestyle, including, but not limited to, abstinence from, or low-risk consumption of, alcohol.

Organizational Leadership

The Coordinator of Fraternity & Sorority Life and Student Leadership provides direct support, vision, and leadership for the overall fraternity and sorority system at Keene State. Our system is comprised of eight inter/nationally recognized Greek-letter organizations, two governing bodies, and one honor society. In conjunction with on-campus chapter advisors, alumni advisors, and College resources as well as the support and partnership of each of our recognized Greek-letter organization’s headquarters, members of the FSL community are afforded various opportunities for personal, professional, and organizational development. Members of the community are held accountable by their peers, and the officers of their chapters and governing councils to fully take advantage of, and mutually support, the programs, events, trainings, philanthropic and community service activities available to them.

Academic Achievement

Each chapter/colony will develop and utilize an academic plan and programs for its members. The programs should encourage improved academic achievement and seek to raise the overall GPA of the fraternity and sorority community. A minimum of a 2.5 cumulative GPA is required for an undergraduate student to join/affiliate with a social Greek-letter organization at Keene State College. Following initiation into an organization, a minimum of a 2.0 cumulative GPA is required of all fraternity and sorority students to maintain general membership within a Greek-letter organization at Keene State College (unless a higher minimum cumulative GPA is required by a specific chapter in which members of that chapter must adhere to that minimum cumulative GPA). Those students that hold a leadership/Executive Board position within their Greek-letter organization must have earned, and must maintain, a minimum 2.3 cumulative GPA to hold that position (unless a higher minimum cumulative GPA is required by a specific chapter in which members of that chapter must adhere to that minimum cumulative GPA to hold their leadership/Executive Board position).

New Member Practices

All Greek organizations will adopt positive new member practices designed to enhance the personal development, academic achievement, and overall collegiate success of all members.

  • The goals of the new member education process must be consistent with the goals and mission of the college.
  • All new member education programs must be approved by the college through individual chapter advisors.
  • All potential new members to the fraternity and sorority system at Keene State must meet a specific set of minimum criterion to be considered eligible to go through the new member education process by the Office of Student Involvement. No student will be permitted to begin/go through the new member education process unless he or she has completed at least one semester (a minimum of 12 credit hours) of academic course work at Keene State College and is in good academic standing with the College, with a cumulative G.P.A. of 2.5 or higher (transfer students will be the only exception to this policy - please see below for transfer student eligibility specifications). In addition to being in good academic standing with the College, any student desiring to begin/go through the new member education process must also be in good social/judicial standing with the College.

Per the Office of Student Involvement and the Dean of Students Office, the following minimum criterion must be met for a transfer student to be eligible to begin/go through the new member education process:

  • The student has earned, and can provide documentation for, a minimum of 24 transferable credits (i.e. at least 24 credits from the transfer student’s former higher education institution have been approved by the Office of the Registrar at Keene State College for transfer). The transfer student must provide the Coordinator of Fraternity & Sorority Life and Student Leadership a letter from the College Registrar verifying this with his/her new member contract.
  • The student has earned, and can provide documentation for, a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 at their former higher education institution. The transfer student must provide the Coordinator of Fraternity & Sorority Life and Student Leadership a copy of their transcript from their former higher education institution to verify this with his/her new member contract.
  • All members should recognize the significance and responsibilities that chapter rituals entail, should live those values and ideals in daily life, and not feel that they will lose their meaning if shared with non-chapter members.
  • Hazing will never be tolerated at Keene State College. Hazing is a violation of the College Discipline System and New Hampshire State Law. Hazing is also contradictory to the fostering of an environment which promotes academic freedom, human dignity, student development, and the aspiration and attainment of the ideals of brotherhood/sisterhood.
