What is J-term and when is it?

J term (or winter term) is the time during Keene State’s winter break between the end of the Fall semester courses and the beginning of the Spring semester courses. Most courses will run between January 2nd and January 14th. Please see the individual course listing for specific course information.

How are J-Term Credits counted?

J-Term courses are counted as a part of a student’s Spring course load. That allows students to take up to 20 credits before additional tuition is required. J-Term courses require an additional fee of $230 per credit which is due at the time of registration.

What courses are available?

Several one- and two-credit courses are scheduled for J-term. Online, in-person (on-campus) and blended (some in-person, some online) courses are available. Also, there is one, 4-credit Outdoor Leadership course also available which has additional fees associated with it.

Courses are listed in Student Planning - just search on J-Term.

How much do J-Term courses cost?

Tuition is based on the current “in-state” and “out of state” part-time matriculated tuition rates. A $230 per credit “J” term fee is also added. *Anyone interested in using financial aid to help with the fees should reach out to the office directly prior to Dec. 15.

How do I register for J-Term?

Registration for J-term courses must be completed through the Office of Graduate Studies and Extended Education (GSEE) located on the first floor of the Elliot Center. You can contact GSEE for assistance at continuing-ed@keene.edu or by phone at 603-358-2290.

When can I register for J-Term?

J-Term registration will open Oct. 23, the same date that Spring 2024 course registration begins. You will be held to the same registration priority assignment as what you were assigned for Spring 2024 registration. J-term registration will end on Wednesday, December 20th prior to KSC’s winter break closure.

Can I drop a J-Term course once I have registered?

The schedule adjustment/withdrawal dates and the refund period for J-term are much shorter. Once a student registers for a J-term course, they are responsible for dropping any course they decide not to attend or are required by policy to drop by the last date of J-term registration (for J-term 2024 the date is December 20, 2023). Students may drop a course utilizing Self Service. Any course dropped during this time will not be recorded on a student’s permanent academic record.

If I withdraw from a J-Term course will I get a refund?

Course withdrawal for J-Term ends at the midpoint of the course that is 5 days or longer. For example, if a course is 5 days in length, the withdrawal period ends at the end of the 3rd day. Courses that are one (1) day in length have no refund option.

Given that the courses are a part of a student’s spring course schedule. Refunds would only be offered if a student took more than the 20-credit semester limit. The refund policy for any additional tuition paid is below. 100% of the fees are non-refundable after the course begins.

J-Term refunds (additional tuition): Prior to Day 1 – 100%, Up to the midpoint of the class (Day 3 of a one-week class) – 50%, After the midpoint of the class (Day 4 and beyond of a one-week class) - 0.

J-term registration fees are refundable until the course begins.

If I complete my degree requirements during J-Term will I be able to graduate immediately?

No. Graduation will follow the spring conferral schedule, so the earliest a student who completed their degree requirements during J-term would be able to graduate is May.

Will J-term credits count toward the 60-credit housing requirement?

No. J-term courses are a part of a student’s Spring semester course load and are not considered toward the housing credit requirement until the end of the semester.

Is housing available during J-Term?
