Professional Activities

Several members of the Keene State community attended the recent American Democracy Project (ADP) Annual Meeting in Denver. The theme of the meeting was “21st Century Citizens: Building Bridges, Solving Problems.” Hank Knight, Patrick Dolenc, and Kim Schmidl-Gagne presented a session on the upcoming Symposium and threaded events entitled “Finding Your Place in the Evolving Commons.” Mark Gempler, Wes Martin, Mike McCarthy, Marj Droppa, and Kim Schmidl-Gagne presented “Civic Learning in the Classroom.” Student Dylan Morrill participated on a panel also focused on civic learning in the curriculum and shared his personal story of involvement with ADP.

The College Sports Information Directors of America honored Sports Information Coordinator Stuart Kaufman with three awards for his outstanding writing. Stuart’s work was recognized among a record 525 entries for the 2012-2013 season with only seven national award recipients. Stuart’s national winning entry was in the category of Athlete Profile for his piece, “Mastrangelo Follows Trail Back to Keene State.” In addition, Stuart received two District 1 awards: in the General Feature category for “Inspirational Message Keeps Keene State Men’s Lacrosse Team Focused,” and in the Event Coverage category for “Keene State Men Stun No 1 Middlebury 77-76.” The recipient of numerous honors, Stuart was also recognized by the College Sports Information Directors of America in 2009 with a second-place award. Stuart’s writing not only appears in Keene State publications and media, but is routinely picked up by a variety of local, regional, and national news organizations. Irene Herold, Dean of the Library, is the contributing editor for the July 2013 Library Issues: Briefings for Faculty and Administrators. Her issue topic is “The Mindful Library Leader.” She also co-authored a chapter with other members of her Ph.D. cohort, “The Triple Bottom Line: Portable Applications and Best Practices for Sustainability in Academic Libraries,” accepted for inclusion in Focus on Educating for Sustainability: Toolkit for Academic Libraries edited by Maria A. Jankowska and scheduled for publication by Library Juice in 2013. The chapter started as a course assignment in 2007, was presented at a national conference in 2011, and now has been re-worked for publication.
