Joseph Darby (Professor of Music) presented the paper “Handel and his Contemporaries: Subscription Concertos in 18th-Century Britain” at the American Handel Society biennial conference, held at Princeton University, on February 23. Composers and publishers in eighteenth-century Britain used the subscription method to manage production costs, improve sales, and provide a reliable system of distribution. Although the subscription method accounted for a fraction of total music sales in the eighteenth century, the transactions recorded by subscription lists provide useful demographic information about buyers in the marketplace. The paper provides an analysis of roughly 5,000 subscribers to subscription concertos published in Britain between 1726 and 1797.
