Professional Activities

Beverly J. Ferrucci (Professor of Mathematics), Eileen Phillips (Director of the Math Center), and Stephen Bismarck (Assistant Professor of Mathematics) presented “Engaging Activities and Successful Strategies for Differentiating Instruction” at the Regional Exposition of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics in Hartford, CT. Their interactive workshop was designed to help elementary school teachers reinforce and build new strategies for differentiating instruction for all students with an emphasis on algebra, geometry, measurement, and problem solving.

Christopher Swist’s latest orchestral work, Abaprima, is being premiered by the Bard Conservatory Orchestra at the Fisher Center in Annandale-on-Hudson, NY, on December 9. Swist will be at Bard to work with the conservatory orchestra and the percussion studio before the premier. Abaprima is a full-size 20-minute orchestral work that has prominent percussion, harp and piano parts. Marcelo Lehninger, assistant conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and music director of the New West Symphony, is conducting this world premier.

Jose Lezcano, Professor of Music, performed a solo recital Nov. 4, near Houston, Texas, at the Trinity Klein Lutheran Church Concert Series. His program included works by Bach (First Lute Suite) and Bach-admirers like Barrios and Villa-Lobos; he also performed the world premiere of “Del Himnario,” a Sonata on hymn-tunes for solo guitar by Trinity Klein music director and composer Dr. William Brusick, dedicated to Dr. Lezcano, and Vivaldi’s D major concerto accompanied by Dr. Brusick on pipe organ.
