PE Faculty, Students and Alumni Attend Conference

From Donna Smyth:

On November 15-16, Physical Education Teacher Certification (PETC) faculty and 27 students attended the 2012 New Hampshire Association for Health Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (NHAHPERD) Conference held at Waterville Valley. KSC faculty who attended the conference included: Beverly King (NHAHPERD secretary), Dan Durand, Joel Feldmann, Fitni Destani, and Donna Smyth. In addition, current students and faculty were joined by many KSC alumni, both during formal sessions and at a gathering sponsored by KSC Alumni and Parent Relations with support from Development.

The conference provides a venue for physical education professionals to share their research and curricular innovations with others. Dr. Fitni Destani, with current students Riley Cohen, Andrew Conrad, Allison Tamiso, Mia McGorry, Preston Ingram, Samantha Person, and Nicole Read presented a session, “The ABC’s of Assessment.” The presentation provided participants with information related to the value and creation of various forms of valid and reliable assessment tools that could be used in a physical education setting.

Included in the conference program was the recognition of outstanding current and future professionals. This year, Riley Cohen and Allison Tamiso were named as Keene State College’s Physical Education Outstanding Future Professionals. They joined nominees from Plymouth State University and the University of New Hampshire to represent our state in the Outstanding Future Professional program at the 2013 Eastern District AHPERD Conference. Allison Tamiso and Nicole DiFloures from UNH were chosen to represent New Hampshire at the spring 2013 conference. Allison joins a long list of KSC students who have been chosen for this honor in the past. In addition to our undergraduate student honors, Michelle Tiani ‘03, physical education teacher at Wheelock School, was honored as New Hampshire’s Outstanding Elementary Physical Education Teacher of the Year.
