GEO Photo Contest Winners Announced

Water Canal, Venice
Water Canal, Venice

From GEO:

We have a winner… Actually, we have 6 winners in the Global Education Office’s Study Away Photo Contest, 2011 Fall edition!

The photo contest, held each semester, allows students who have studied away under GEO auspices to share their photos with the Keene State community. The photos were on display in the Student Center and were voted on anonymously by students, faculty, and staff. After the contest, the photos are placed in a long-term display case on the third floor of the Student Center. Students entered their photos into three categories:

  • Global Engagement and Citizenship: Photos that capture aspects of global engagement and citizenship as students experienced it while studying away.
  • General Study Away Experience: Photos that capture aspects of students’ study away experience that they would like to share with others.
  • Global Engagement & Citizenship – Written Description: In addition to the general photo contest voted by the college community, a select group of globally engaged faculty and administrators select the written description that best expresses/captures the study away experience and global engagement. This selection is based on the written description more than the photo itself.

The 1st place winner of each category wins a $60 gift certificate to the bookstore. 2nd place winners receive a $40 gift certificate.

The winners are:

Global Engagement and Citizenship:
1st Place:

Katherine DeLuca – “Water Canal, Venice”

Description: While in Prague, my friends and I made it a point to visit one of the concentration camps used by the Nazis during the holocaust. It is a day and an experience which will remain with me for the rest of my life. This photo is of the cemetery for all the people killed in the concentration camp within the town. For me, this photo demonstrates that as global citizens, it is our responsibility to seek out the past, no matter how horrific it is, in order to remember, learn and grow from our mistakes as humans.

Congratulations to everyone who participated, and especially to this semester’s winners!
