Black Ants and Buddhists March 31

From Dottie Bauer, Education:

Diverse Voices from the Field, a project of the Education Department, announces that author Mary Cowhey will be speaking on Thursday, March 31 at 4 and 7:30 p.m. in the Mabel Brown Room. Mary is the author of Black Ants and Buddhists: Thinking Critically and Teaching Differently in the Primary Grades (Stenhouse, 2006), which was the winner of the 2008 National Association for Multicultural Education Philip C. Chinn Multicultural Book Award and the 2007 Skipping Stones Multicultural Book Award. More information about Mary can be found at her website.

Here is what Mary says about her talk, entitled “Black Ants and Buddhists: Thinking Critically and Teaching Differently:”

“Were you inspired to become a teacher because you wanted to change the world and instead find yourself limited by teach-to-the-test pressures? What would a classroom look like if understanding and respecting differences in race, culture, beliefs and opinions were at its heart? This talk will help you think critically about how you spend your time with students by using student-generated questions to develop integrated curriculum and will offer starting points for conversations about diversity in your classroom, as well as in the larger community.”

Students, faculty, staff, and community members are welcome to attend. Presentations are free and open to the public. The presentation will be of interest to all who care about improving American education.
