English Student Touring Company Brings Twelfth Night to Campus

From Connie Lester, Redfern:

On Saturday, September 19, the KSC Theatre and Dance Department will welcome acting students from the Castle Theatre Company at Durham University in England. The students will present Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night at 7:30 p.m. in the Main Theatre of the Redfern Arts Center (admission is free, but donations will be accepted).

In Twelfth Night, one of Shakespeare’s most celebrated comedies, the audience feels both sympathy and scorn for some of the most memorable characters in theatre: Orsino, the Duke of Illyria; Countess Olivia, a mourning love-interest; Malvolio, a pompous head steward; Sir Toby Belch, a drunken tormentor; Viola, a cross-dressing niece; and many others. The Castle Theatre Company opened its production of Twelfth Night with three performances in England, and spent July touring stately homes throughout the English countryside before arriving in the United States to tour the Northeast in September. The U.S. tour hopes to initiate a cultural exchange that will allow American college theatre productions to travel to England and perform on historic castle grounds. For more information, call Dan Patterson (8- 2198) or PeggyRae Johnson (8-2166).
