Keene State College’s Cohen Center Opens Registration for Summer Institute in Holocaust and Genocide Studies

Weeklong Program Offers Instruction from Expert Faculty and Special Guests

Keene State College’s Cohen Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies has opened registration for its Summer Institute, a weeklong residential educational experience in Holocaust and genocide studies, which is sponsored by the New Hampshire Humanities Council. The program, started a decade ago, grounds participants – teachers and interested individuals – in basic themes of Holocaust and genocide studies as well as explores approaches and applications for the classroom and other learning environments.

The program will feature expert faculty and guests, including keynote speaker, Dr. Ellen J. Kennedy, founder and executive director of World Without Genocide, a human rights organization committed to protecting innocent people, preventing genocide, advocating for justice and remembering those lives that have been destroyed by violence. Also included is a visit from special guest Stephan Levy, a child survivor of the Holocaust who was born in Berlin and later became an intelligence officer for the US Army in World War II.

The program will include a one-day trip to Boston to visit the Pucker Gallery and Facing History and Ourselves, a nonprofit dedicated to combating racism, antisemitism and prejudice, and nurturing democracy.

Graduates from this program become Cohen Center Fellows, a group of professionals charged with promoting the mission of the Cohen Center in their schools and communities. There are 106 Cohen Center Fellows from eight states and seven countries, including Estonia, Germany, Hungary, Israel, Latvia, Romania and Slovakia.
