The Redfern and the Colonial Present Romeo and Juliet
KEENE, N.H., 4/5/10 - The world’s greatest tragic love story will come to life when Keene State College’s Redfern Arts Center and Keene’s Colonial Theatre present William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet on Wednesday, April 14. Produced by the Acting Company and the Guthrie Theatre, the Colonial will host a performance for local schools at 9:30 a.m. and a public performance at 7:30 p.m.
In Shakespeare’s iconic romantic tragedy, innocent young lovers fall victim to family hatred and cruel destiny. Swords clash, everlasting love is promised, and a treacherous sleeping potion is swallowed in the greatest love story of all time. Young love has never been so delightful or as dangerous as in this stirring new production.
Evoking the lyricism of Shakespeare’s sonnets, Romeo and Juliet exquisitely embodies the brief joy of youthful passion and ecstasy in this timeless story. The lovers are deeply passionate, as only teenagers can be, while their families’ mutual disdain and prejudice lead to revenge and an irreversible fate. Penny Metropulos from Oregon Shakespeare Festival directs the play.
With the presentation Romeo and Juliet, The Acting Company will continue its 36-year tradition of bringing touring classical productions, talented young actors, and teaching artists into communities across America.
This production of Romeo and Juliet is part of Shakespeare for a New Generation, a national theater initiative sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts in cooperation with Arts Midwest.
Though the school performance is sold out, tickets are still available for the evening performance and range in price from $38 to $25 ($5 ticket for Keene State students with valid ID). To order tickets, call the Colonial box office at 603-352-2033 or visit www.thecolonial.org.
