Jazz Vocalist Tierney Sutton at the Redfern

KEENE, 9/13/2010 - Keene State’s Redfern Arts Center will open its 2010-2011 Visiting Artists season with the straight-head jazz styling of Tierney Sutton and her band on Wednesday, October 6, 2010 at 7:30 p.m. In addition, Sutton and the band will conduct a workshop that same afternoon at 2 p.m., in the Redfern’s Alumni Recital Hall. The workshop is free and open to the public. The workshop and performance are made possible through the generous support of Peerless Insurance and Northeast Delta Dental.

During its 15 years together, the Tierney Sutton Band has received three Grammy nominations for Best Vocal Jazz Album, a JazzWeek award for Vocalist of the Year, and consecutive nominations for Jazz Journalist Association Awards. The band has recorded several CDs that made the number-one spot on jazz radio playlists and garnered critical praise throughout the world.

Comprised of Sutton and instrumental virtuosos Christian Jacob, Trey Henry, Kevin Axt, and Ray Brinker, the band has headlined in recent years at Carnegie Hall, the Hollywood Bowl, and Jazz at Lincoln Center and has appeared at the Monterey, Marciac, and Umbria jazz festivals.

To date they have recorded eight CDs, each resulting in increasing recognition and acclaim. The band’s most recent disc, Desire, was released in January 2009. Hailed by Jazz Weekly as “possibly the strongest release yet from this band,” it is the most recent to receive a Grammy nomination.

The New York Times wrote of a recent concert, “Ms. Sutton is a pure jazz spirit who respects a song. Even when going out on an improvisatory limb, she never lets its essence slip away. Her deep, lingering renditions of chestnuts like ‘Blue Skies’ and ‘Without a Song’ are especially impressive for the sense of quiet joy she breathes into them.”

Audiences are invited to come early and meet Ms. Sutton before the concert. These Meet and Greets with the artists are hosted by the Redfern and its staff. They will be held before each Visiting Artist’s performance throughout the year. They begin at 6:30 p.m.; light refreshments will be served.

Tickets and information are available at the Redfern Arts Center box office, 603-358-2168, or online at, where you can also view many video clips from the season’s Visiting Artists repertoire. Special memberships with many benefits, including free tickets, are also available at the Redfern box office or online.
