Owls Look to White Out Panthers
KEENE, N.H. 2/12/10 - The long-range forecast for Tuesday in Keene calls for a few snow showers, but inside Spaulding Gym all reports are predicting a White Out.
Back by popular demand, Keene State College will welcome rival Plymouth State University with a White Out for their Little East Conference basketball double-header. The women’s game begins at 5:30 p.m. Tip off for the men’s game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
KSC students with an ID will be given a free specially designed t-shirt. Members of the public will be asked for a donation of at least $5 that will be given to the Kay Yow Breast Cancer Fund. Yow was the former head women’s basketball coach at North Carolina State. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1987 and passed away on January 24, 2009, after facing her third bout with the disease.
Keene State will also make a few special presentations at halftime of the men’s game. Former Owl softball player Jenna Patnode of Surry will be presented with the National Fast Pitch Coaches Association (NFCA) 2009 Golden Shoe Award. Her 47 steals were tops in NCAA Division III play last year. She was the only player in the country with 40 or more swipes last season.
Peter Thomas will receive both Little East Conference men’s and women’s Cross Country Coach of the Year awards. Thomas led the Keene State men to its first team appearance at the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships since 2005, after finishing third at the 2009 NCAA Division III New England Championships. He also directed the Owl women to their 10th consecutive LEC championship.
Keene State will also recognize fall athletes who earned All-America, All- Region, and All-LEC honors.
The Owls hope to have the same results as their first White Out back on Feb. 11, 2008, when the KSC women came from behind to beat UMass-Dartmouth (59-46) and the Keene State men stunned the Corsairs (92-85), who came into the game ranked #2 in Division III.
