KSC Opera Workshop Performs Scenes from Gilbert and Sullivan to Mozart

KEENE, N.H., 03/31/08 - The KSC Opera Workshop will present a variety of opera scenes on Friday, April 11, 2008, at 7:30 p.m. in the Alumni Recital Hall of the Redfern Arts Center on Brickyard Pond. Admission is free. For further information, call the Department of Music at 603-358-2177.

The KSC Opera Workshop was founded in 1979 by Dr. Carroll Lehman, professor of music at Keene State, and has been offered when there have been students capable of handling opera repertoire. The workshop introduces young singers to the world of opera and teaches them the basics of opera-performance practice, such as moving on stage, acting, character development, and vocal projection.

Scenes to be presented are from Bizet’s Carmen, Gilbert and Sullivan’s Mikado, and Mozart’s Magic Flute and Cosi fan Tutte. In addition, arias from Carmen, La Boheme, and The Marriage of Figaro will also be performed.

Students performing are senior Shannon Ward of Sutton, Vermont; juniors Heather O’Connor of Bethany, Connecticut, Kelsey Miller of Stratham, New Hampshire, and Kate Williams of Gilmanton, New Hampshire; sophomores Kimberly Harte of Ellington, Connecticut, Nicole Laperriere of Gardner, Massachusetts, and Karen Viola of Londonderry, New Hampshire; and freshmen Colleen Durkin of Peabody, Massachusetts, and Timothy Price of Bridgewater, Connecticut. Lehman directs the scenes and local pianist Robert Blake provides piano accompaniment and musical coaching.

Lehman has been a member of the Keene State faculty since 1978 and is the conductor and music director of the Monadnock Chorus in Peterborough. Under his direction, the chorus has toured Italy, Austria, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Greece, and Scandinavia. He has conducted the New Hampshire Friendship Chorus and Orchestra on tours of Russia, Latvia, Estonia, and South Africa. Lehman also formed the KSC Oratorio Society, which has performed many major choral masterworks with orchestra.
