KSC's Cohen Center Receives NEBHE's State Merit Award

KEENE, N.H., 3/21/08 - Keene State College’s Cohen Center for Holocaust Studies received The New England Board of Higher Education (NEBHE) 2008 New Hampshire State Merit award at NEBHE’s 2008 New England Higher Education Excellence Awards dinner on March 14 at Boston’s Fairmont Copley Plaza Hotel.

“The Cohen Center performs an important service to all New England by fostering Holocaust and genocide awareness through its collection of historical materials and model outreach programs,” said NEBHE Interim President and CEO Michael K. Thomas.

Each year, NEBHE presents state merit awards to honor the innovative work of organizations, institutions, or individuals in each New England state. Dr. Henry F. Knight, director of the Cohen Center for Holocaust Studies, accepted the award.

The Cohen Center for Holocaust Studies, one of the nation’s oldest Holocaust resource centers, is a nonsectarian organization dedicated to teaching the lessons of the Holocaust. Recognized as a “center of excellence” by the Jewish Foundation for the Righteous, the center has a strong collection of print and media resources, and holds a biennial residential summer institute for educators.

The center supports a minor in Holocaust studies at Keene State College, which combines historical background with an interdisciplinary exploration of the Holocaust through film, literature, philosophy, psychology, religious studies, sociology, women’s studies, and other history offerings. The curriculum gives students a firm knowledge of the Holocaust and helps them to develop an understanding of its precipitating factors and legacy. With a deeper awareness of such issues as prejudice, discrimination, and racism, students are better able to analyze contemporary political situations and to think critically about ethical responsibility.
