KEENE, N.H., 2/19/08 - Keene State College has received presidential recognition for extraordinary contributions to community service in the second annual 2007 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. The College is one of 127 colleges and universities listed on the Honor Roll with Distinction and was the only institution in New Hampshire to receive this award.

Keene State students engaged in 450,675 hours of community service last year, through Communicorps, Community Work Study (Big Brothers Big Sisters, AIDS Services of the Monadnock Region, MANY Options, Monadnock Volunteer Center, Keene State Reads), Community Service Clubs (Circle K, Habitat for Humanity), Hurricane Relief (Race, Class, and Katrina, Alternative Spring Break), and Greek Service (First Book and 1720 additional service hours to the community).

In addition, the College supports special focus programs, including Monadnock Center for Successful Transitions (MCST), Project SEED, Early Sprouts, Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Monadnock Region, and College for Every Student (CFES).

“Community service is a long-held value at Keene State College,” said President Helen Giles-Gee. “I am extremely proud of the national recognition that faculty and staff have earned, and even more appreciative of what they do in service for our New Hampshire neighbors and for communities around the United States and the world.”

The President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, launched in 2006, recognizes colleges and universities nationwide that support innovative and effective community service and service-learning programs. In all, 528 schools were listed on the Honor Roll, 127 schools as Honor Roll with Distinction members, and 391 schools as Honor Roll members for their community service activities during the 2006-07 academic year.
