Gay and Lesbian Film Festival Started October 14

Keene, NH 10/12/05 - The Keene State College Film Society, KSC Pride, and AIDS Services for the Monadnock Region will present The First Annual Monadnock Gay and Lesbian Film Festival on October 14-27. All films will be shown in the Putman Arts Lecture Hall in the Redfern Arts Center.

Only until a few decades ago, gay and lesbian characters in films were portrayed as either villains to be abhorred, and tortured, or suicidal individuals to be pitied. With the advent of independent cinema in the ’80s, gay and lesbian characters became out and proud, and the success of numerous films proved that gay-themed movies could appeal to more than just a niche audience. From the awkwardness and comedy of first love to the drama of the AIDS crisis, these movies all helped to pave the way for gay and lesbian cinema.
