H.L. Mencken to Speak at Keene State College

Travel back in time to meet journalist and critic H.L. Mencken and First Lady and social activist Eleanor Roosevelt.

Thursday evening July 24 at 7 p.m., two scholars will assume the costume and character of these historical figures. Ask questions, debate them, and see history come alive at the Chautauqua Tent, Fiske Quad, Keene State College.

The historical characterizations presented in a Chautauqua are not scripted performances. Each humanities scholar has immersed himself or herself in the life, writings, and times of their selected character.

Audience members are invited to question each figure and, at the end, to question the scholars who return to the stage out of character. Their perspectives as scholars of history adds valuable insight to the discussion.

There is a musical performance each evening at 6 p.m., and families are encouraged to bring picnics to the Quad.

Each day at noon, young Chautauquans, students ages 12-18, will give performances. Bring your lunch and enjoy these delightful presentations.
