Visiting Guitarist Presents Masterclass and Recital

KEENE, N.H. 2/27/02 - Lily Afshar, professor of music and guitar teacher at the University of Memphis, will give a masterclass for guitar students at Keene State College from 3 to 4:15 p.m. on Monday, March 10, in Room 123 of the Redfern Arts Center. An internationally acclaimed performer and recording artist, Afshar was described by the Washington Post as “remarkable, impeccable” and Andres Segovia predicted that she would be “a beautiful celebrity.”

She will present a solo guitar recital later that day at 7 p.m. at the Keene Institute of Music and Related Arts (KIMRA) Recital Hall at 28 Washington Street (across from the Keene Middle School). Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for children.

Dr. Afshar is the winner of the 2000 Orville H. Gibson Award for Best Female Classical Guitarist and was chosen as Artistic Ambassador for the United States Information Agency to Africa. She is the winner of the tenth, eleventh, and twelfth annual Premier Guitarist Awards awarded by the Memphis Chapter of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, Inc. She was among 12 international guitarists who were selected to play for Andres Segovia in his master classes held at the University of Southern California.

She is the head of the guitar program at the University of Memphis where she was awarded the 2000 Board of Visitors Eminent Faculty Award. Born in Tehran, Dr. Afshar holds degrees in guitar performance from the Boston Conservatory of Music, the New England Conservatory of Music, and Florida State University. She has studied at the Banff Centre for Fine Arts and the Aspen Music Festival and School where she taught for five years. She received diplomas of merit from the Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena, Italy.
