KSC Captures LEC Women's Swim Championship

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MASS. 12/7/02 - Keene State College captured its third consecutive Little East Conference Womens Swimming Championship at UMass- Dartmouth on Saturday. The Owls, who have not lost a LEC meet in five years, have won the championship every year it has been contested.

“The women stepped up and swam extremely well, “said KSC Coach Gene Leonard. “No one swimmer won the meet it was a great team effort day.”

Keene State tallied 475 points to edge host UMass-Dartmouth (458 points). The outcome was decided in the final event of the meet when the Owls 400-yard relay team of Karly Smith (Concord, N.H.), Kate Goulet (Nashua, N.H.), Cathy Sue Klein (Middlesex, N.J.), and Megan Humphreys (New Hartford, N.Y.) won the race with a time of 3:55.31.

Keene State won 11 of the 16 events and set six meet records at the championship. In addition to helping the Owls win the decisive relay, Humphreys also saw to victories in the 200 freestyle (2:03.97) and set a record with a time of 5:31.64 in the 500 freestyle.

Junior Lisa Wandeloski (Westfield, Mass.) also had a big day for KSC with three first place finishes. She won the 50 (25.43) and 100 freestyle events and the 100 butterfly (1:02.87). Her time in the 100 free was a meet record.

Alexis Collins (River Edge, N.J.) and Lanell Smith (Concord, N.H.) each won a pair of races. Collins victories in the 100 (1:05.39) and 200 backstroke (2:19.66) races were both meet record. Smith had record time of 1:12.93 in the 100-breast stroke and a mark of 2:40.98 in the 200-breast stroke.

Collins, Karly Smith, Lanell Smith and Wandeloski also teamed up to win the 200 yard medley relay in a record time of 1:56.83.
