Keene Artist Wins People's Choice Award

KEENE, N.H. 12/2/02 - Patricia B. Wright of Keene has won the Peoples Choice Award for her oil painting The Apple Green Jar in the 2002 Biennial Regional Jurors Choice Exhibition continuing through Dec. 8 at Keene State Colleges Thorne-Sagendorph Art Gallery. This is the third time Wright has won the award, which is based on votes by visitors to the exhibit.

Wrights painting is one of 55 pieces of art created by 42 artists and selected by juror Marijo Dougherty, director of the University Art Museum, State University of New York at Albany, from 310 pieces submitted by 174 artists. The competition was open to artists living within 30 miles of Keene and Friends of the Thorne.

Visitors cast 267 votes for their favorite, and the most went to Wrights painting, a traditional still life. She will receive a $100 cash award along with the Peoples Choice Commendation. Wright was chosen for the 2000 award and also won in 1984, the first year the regional juried exhibition took place.

Wright has been painting for many years since raising her children. She studied art history at Wellesley College and painting at the Sharon Arts Center. Her work is shown often at the Copley Society in Boston, where she has been designated a Copley Master. Her preferred medium is oil on canvas and her favored theme is still life. Her son, John Wright, is president of J.A. Wright and Company, one of the oldest family-owned businesses in Keene.

In addition to the Biennial Regional Jurors Choice Exhibition, the Thorne Gallery is showing Digital Frontiers: Photographys Future at Nash Editions, in the West Gallery. This exhibition looks at the future of photography in the computerized, digital world of the 21st century.

Free guided gallery tours through both exhibits are offered at 2 p.m. every Sunday by KSC art student intern Charles Langille. Reservations are not required.

The gallery is open from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday through Wednesday, and noon to 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday.

The exhibits and tours are free and open to the public. For information, call 603-358-2720, or visit www.keene.edu/tsag.
