Guitar Concert Ranges from Renaissance to Star Wars

KEENE, N.H. 3/28/02 - The Keene State College Guitar Orchestra, the Latin American Ensemble, and the Guitar Ensemble will perform Renaissance dance and Andean folk music along with a hit by Sting and a Star Wars medley in a Wednesday, April 10, concert. Works by Handel, Bizet, Piazzolla, Praetorius, and Corelli will be on the program, which starts at 7:30 p.m. in the Alumni Recital Hall of the Redfern Arts Center on Brickyard Pond. Tickets are $7 for the general public and $5 for KSC students, senior citizens, and youth 17 and under. Call the box office at 603-358-2168.

Keene State Professor of Music José Lezcano will direct the KSC Guitar Orchestra and the Latin American Ensemble. Keene State faculty member Ted Mann will direct the KSC Guitar Ensemble.

The KSC Guitar Orchestra will play Renaissance dances by Praetorius and the Overture from Georges Bizet’s “Carmen.” Students Logan Gabriel and Tim Gagnon will be soloists in a concerto grosso by Arcangelo Corelli.

Gabriel, Gagnon, and junior Matt Hart will perform guitar solos as members of the KSC Guitar Ensemble. The Guitar Ensemble will play “The Arrival of the Queen of Sheba” by G. F. Handel, Sting’s “King of Pain,” and a medley of music from Star Wars films.

The Latin American Ensemble will perform tangos by Gardel and Piazzolla and traditional Andean folk music.

The Guitar Orchestra and Ensembles concert provides music students with an opportunity for public performance that is essential to graduation from Keene State with a degree in music. Students interested in music may opt for one of four programs: bachelor of music in music education, bachelor of music in music performance, bachelor of arts in theory/composition, and bachelor of arts in history and literature. Keene State offers 35 major programs and has an enrollment of 4,700 students with more than 100 students choosing to major or minor in music.
