Performance Will Celebrate V-Day at Keene State College

KEENE, N.H. 1/20/02 The Vagina Monologues, the Obie Award-winning performance piece by Eve Ensler, will be performed by Keene State College faculty, staff, and students on Sunday, Feb. 10 at 2 p.m. and Wednesday, Feb. 13 at 7:30 p.m. in the Mabel Brown Room of the Student Center at KSC.

The performance, which celebrates womens sexuality, is part of the V-Day College Campaign, a nationwide movement demanding an end to all forms of violence against women.

Sponsored by the Women’s Studies Program, the Womens Studies Council, KSC PRIDE, and the Feminist Collective, the performances at KSC will be the highlight of a week-long educational effort to help raise consciousness about violence against women. Nationwide, the play will be performed at over 150 colleges during the weeks surrounding Valentines Day.

The Vagina Monologues was first performed at KSC last year. The response to the performance was so enthusiastic, says Jennifer Warner of KSCs V-Day Campaign, that the organizers decided to stage two shows this year and charge an attendance fee. Tickets, $3 for students and $5 for the general public, are available at Bagel Works, at Toadstool Books, and at the door. All proceeds of the shows, says Warner, will go to Monadnock Womens Crisis Center and RAWA (Radical Association of Women in Afghanistan).

First presented as a one-woman show by Ensler in 1997, the play has since become the major fund-raising event of V-Day. The Vagina Monologues comprises 17 vignettes, some humorous, others poignant, based on interviews Ensler conducted with women across the country.

A cast of 25 will perform the show at KSC. Parents should be aware that the performance uses explicit sexual language and addresses issues of violence.
