Keene State Graphic Design Seniors Show Portfolios April 30

KEENE, N.H. 4/15/04 - Keene State College seniors majoring in graphic design will open their portfolios for public review on Friday, April 30, from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Mabel Brown Room of the Young Student Center.

Members of the local business community are encouraged to attend the event and review the portfolios of these 27 graphic design seniors, who are prepared for design-related careers such as publishing, advertising, web design, and multi- media graphics. Students’ friends and family and community members also are invited to the portfolio review, which is free. Refreshments will be served. For further information, call the KSC Department of Art at 603-358-2040.

Graphic design has become such a popular major at KSC that applicants to the program must now submit design work samples. In addition to portfolios, several seniors will be using computers to show their design work, said graphic design instructor Robert Kostick, who is coordinating the portfolio review.

The portfolio review showcases the best design work each student has produced while pursuing a bachelor of arts or a bachelor of fine arts at Keene State. Graphic design students are required to take a portfolio seminar in which they prepare a professional presentation of their work. During this class, seniors may develop new pieces and refine work completed in other art and graphic design classes.

The portfolio review coincides with “Emerging Art,” the annual Keene State art students’ exhibition at the Thorne-Sagendorph Art Gallery. The gallery will extend its hours to 8 p.m. on Friday, April 30 so people can visit both the portfolio review and the exhibit, which features work in graphic design and studio art. Gallery visitors will be invited to vote for their favorite works in both categories. The artist of each winning selection will be presented with People’s Choice Commendations, which each carries a $100 cash prize sponsored by the Friends of the Thorne. The People’s Choice Commendations will be announced on Monday, May 3.

The portfolio review and exhibit are free and open to the public. For exhibit information, call the Thorne Gallery at 603-358-2720 or visit www.keene.edu/tsag.
