Defending the Water Protectors: Indigenous Resistance to Hydroelectric Projects in Guatemala
Alumni Center - Centennial Hall
Tuesday, · -
A lecture by Caya Simonsen, recently returned after six months in Guatemala, where she accompanied Maya communities in the Huehuetenango department who are defending their land and territories against the forced imposition of hydroelectric projects. She will explain the indigenous people's resistance to mega-projects, the deadly retaliation being taken by the development companies and police against that resistance, and the fight of the people for their own vision of development.
