Workshop for Educators: Developing Lessons for Holocaust and Genocide Education

Friday, · -

Workshop Overview:

In the fall of 2022, New Hampshire’s state-wide mandate for Holocaust and genocide education went into effect. This workshop will provide an opportunity for educators to come together and discuss the complexities of Holocaust and genocide education on multiple levels. The full-day program will be broken up into four sessions, addressing: 1) the state-wide mandate and resources available for fulfilling this teaching standard, 2) lessons that can be derived from museums and other sites of public memory/education, 3) a hands-on workshop with frameworks for creating lesson plans, and 4) an educational and fact-based briefing on the current situation on Ukraine.

Educators who successfully complete this workshop will be able to:

  • Access and utilize existing resources/curricula to fulfill teaching requirements in NH.
  • Articulate the role that museums and other sites of public memory can play in teaching about the Holocaust or other genocides.
  • Discuss and develop lesson plans for classroom adoption using the 10 Stages of Genocide framework.
  • Analyze the current situation in Ukraine using insights from genocide studies.

This workshop is presented by the Cohen Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies at Keene State College. It will be led by Tom White and Evan Czyzowski.

Attendees may choose to participate either in person (on the campus of Keene State College) or virtually (via Zoom). For those participating in person, a light breakfast will be available beginning at 8:30am and lunch will be provided halfway through the day. Those joining virtually can log into Zoom in time to begin at 9:00am.
