Role of Public Lands in the U.S.: Past, Present, and Future

April 04, 2017 · 4:00 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.
Alumni Center - Centennial Hall

A panel discussion that will be introduced by a short film and a reading from the book Toward a Natural Forest, by Jim Furnish, former US Forest Service Deputy Chief and former supervisor of the Siuslaw National Forest, Oregon. As Deputy Chief, Furnish was a primary worker on the roadless conservation area rule of 2001. At the Siuslaw Forest, he started his role as supervisor just after the court injunction that banned logging, in order to protect the spotted owl, and he led the re-thinking of the management of that forest from resource extraction to ecosystem management. The panel discussion will also include Tom Wagner, Supervisor of the White Mountain National Forest, and Jeremy Wilson, executive director of the Harris Center for Conservation Education.
