Becoming Allies: Refugees and Immigrants in Keene
Please join us for a panel presentation, workshop, and discussion featuring three experts:
5:00-6:00 p.m.
- Molly Short Carr, program director of the International Institute of New England (IINE), will speak about the resettlement process in New Hampshire. Prior to working with IRC, Ms. Carr was the Deputy Director for Administration for the Refugee Support Center (RSC) Africa, operated by CWS Africa.
- a representative from Doctors Without Borders will speak on the refugee camp experience and the challenges that Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) International faces, and the start of the resettlement process.
- a representative from Welcoming Manchester will discuss how a coalition of community members welcome and empower their immigrant and refugee neighbors in New Hampshire.
6:00-6:45 p.m.
The workshop portion of the event will focus on the efforts of the Keene Immigrant and Refugee Partnership. Two representatives from the group will offer a brief overview of how and why the group was created, and elaborate on their strategy in understanding and making Keene a more immigrant and refugee-friendly city. A guided discussion will explore the work of the Keene group as an example of local citizen activism including: the primary goal of the group, who their allies are in the community, who the powerholders are, and how they can most effectively move forward.
Organized by Nicole Wengerd and the Social Problems course, and co-sponsored by the Global Education Office and the Office of Diversity and Multiculturalism. Open to the public.
To request accommodations for a disability, please contact the coordinator at least two weeks prior to the event.
