Violence Against Asian Americans: How did we get here?
Lecture and Discussion by Dr. Jeffery Scott Mio
Jeffery Scott Mio, PhD, is a professor at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. He obtained his PhD in clinical psychology from University of Illinois at Chicago. His research focuses on metaphors and their use in political persuasion; multicultural issues, and tools needed to develop allies for marginalized groups. He recently co-authored the 5th edition of "Multicultural Psychology," a critical textbook for graduate students that he has contributed to for several years. His other areas of teaching include social psychology and cognitive psychology.
Throughout his career, he has been active in six APA Divisions, including Div. 45, Society for the Psychological Study of Culture Ethnicity and Race, for which he served as president. He also served as a chair for various boards within the Asian American Psychological Association and as a past president of the Western Psychological Association. Other affiliations include the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists and the American Psychological Society.
Some notable awards Mio has received are: the Distinguished Contribution Award from the Asian American Psychological Association, the Outstanding Career Achievement Award for Teaching and Training from the American Psychological Association, the George P Hart Award for Leadership from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona and the Diversity Champion Award, also from California Polytechnic University, Pomona.
