KSC Seminar/Webinar Series: Natural Fibers as Sustainable Material Alternatives for Engineered Industrial Uses

Wednesday, · -

Presented by Dr. Jared Nelson, Sustainable Product Design and Architecture: Compared to synthetic fibers, bast fibers from plants such as hemp, flax, and kenaf offer comparative reduction in energy and CO2 emissions. Further, this emerging agricultural commodity is generating over $600M annually nationally with an additional 1.64 indirect jobs added for every bio-based job added. As such, these materials achieve the nexus of sustainability by offering positive environmental, social, and economic impacts. This presentation will discuss the potential for success of hemp and other bast plants in industrial and technical applications as a function of how they compare to other materials on a cost and performance basis.
