KSC Seminar/Webinar Series: The Science and Technology of Reclaiming Raw Materials
Constantly seeing distressing images of waste in our oceans and lands often leaves us with an overwhelming sense of hopelessness. What is largely hidden from the public’s view is the constant progression of recycling technology and policies that promote the reclamation and increased use and reprocessing of recyclable materials.
To fully understand recycling, a holistic context is needed; the lifecycle framework provides such a perspective. The lifecycle process for any man-made material includes extraction-harvesting, purification, and conversion to raw materials, which are then manufactured into various products and finally reclaimed and reused.
Only recently have people begun to dialogue and focus on a circular economy, cradle to cradle, based on reclamation and reuse of raw materials. Interestingly, design for disassembly has been explored for decades, while recycling technology has been available for some time and continues to be improved.
This talk will first review consumers’ perception of recycling, then move on to explore the science (just a little), the current state of recycling, recycling technology, and finally reclamation, repurposing, and reuse of man-made raw materials.
