KSC Seminar/Webinar Series: An Intersectional Analysis of COVID-19 Unemployment

Wednesday, · -

Webinar presented by Dr. Armagan Gezici, Economics. The COVID-19 pandemic and social distancing measures brought the national unemployment rate from 4.4% in March 2020 to 14.7% in April 2020. The job losses were particularly prominent for women and people of color. In this talk, Dr. Gezici discusses the reasons behind the disproportionate job losses by race and gender categories. By providing evidence from the U.S. population survey, she shows that higher unemployment of Hispanic and Black women cannot be explained by the differences in education, age, industry, occupation, or the regions of employment of these women.
