2020 Joyce Lecture in Native American Studies

Wednesday, · -

The English Department invites you to the 2020 Joyce Lecture in Native American Studies. Our speaker is Ms. Cheryl Savageau and the (Zoom) event is on Wednesday, October 14th at 4:00 pm. Please use this link: https://keene.zoom.us/j/94453714124

Of Abenaki and French Canadian heritage, Cheryl Savageau is the author of the poetry collections Mother/Land (2006), Dirt Road Home: Poems (1995, nominated for the Pulitzer Prize), and Home Country (1992). In 2020, she published Out of the Crazywoods, an autobiography on her experience with bi-polar disorder. Savageau’s poetry retells Abenaki stories, often focusing on the unrecognized lives of women and the working class; her work is enriched by the landscape and ecology of New England. Her knowledge of lakes, ecology, and the importance of storytelling informed her children’s book Muskrat Will Be Swimming (1996), a winner of the Notable Book for Children Award from the Smithsonian and the Skipping Stones Book Award for Exceptional Multicultural and Ecology and Nature Books.
