SSH Seminar Series: Monopoly in the U.S. economy?
Presented by Dr. Armagan Gezici: The issue of increased monopolization in the U.S. economy has attracted significant attention from economists and the press in the last couple of years. In this talk, evidence for increasing market power of corporations will be presented, and the causes and consequences of this trend discussed. An optimistic take on the issue suggests the use of new technologies leading to the creation of super-star firms has been responsible for the trend. Taking issues with this optimistic view, the speaker will show the opposite has been the case in the U.S. since the mid-2000s: industries with higher monopolization display signs of slower technological change.
