A Correctional Officers primary responsibilities include, care, custody and control of pretrial and sentenced inmates housed in Essex County. Their duties include: Communicating effectively with inmates, searching cells and other areas for contraband, patrolling housing units, control and monitor activities regarding inmate movement, maintaining inmate counts, operating and securing doors, applying handcuffs or other restraints when necessary, dealing calmly and effectively in stressful situations including emergencies, computer tasks, report writing on incidents, communicating via two way radios.
Associates Degree or 60 credits towards a Bachelors Degree OR Two years Military Experience
Minimum 21 Years Old
Valid Drivers License
$50,000 plus benefits

This is accomplished by: * Housing inmates in a secure and fair manner. * Providing rehabilitation and academic training to offenders while they are incarcerated, so they will not repeat their mistakes once they are released. * Practicing correctional polices that comply with all local, state and federal laws. * Using innovative correctional approaches that are in accord with the Essex County Sheriffs Departments top mission * Informing and educating the public about the department through the media, tours of the facility and public appearances by the sheriff, administrators, K-9 Unit, and uniformed personnel.
