Injury Prevention Coordinator
As part of the Baystate Health Safety & Environmental Affairs Department this position will perform a variety of duties by providing professional services for preventing the occurrence of occupational injuries. This position will also be responsible for developing and maintaining programs related to the reduction of injuries from ergonomic hazards, patient related transport and transfer injuries and sharps injuries all in accordance with healthcare regulations and other industries as applicable.
Performs ergonomic site assessments as dictated through injury and accident review and based on referrals from Employee Health Service or the BH Safety Department. The Injury Prevention Coordinator will also Chair the Baystate Health Ergonomics Committee.
Review accident report forms as submitted by Baystate Health leadership. Identify and investigate those involving ergonomic injuries, sharps injuries and exposure to blood and body, hazardous pharmaceuticals or chemicals.
Manage and chair the Baystate Health Sharps Injury Prevention Program (SIPC). The Injury Prevention Coordinator will partner with Baystate Health Materials Management and all clinical departments to: Review and update all required DPH documentation for non-safety sharps exemptions and manage approval process through the SIPC.
Identify safety alternatives to non-safety sharps and manage trials in concert with Materials Management. Review the annual report of sharps injuries with the SIPC and determine potential device types for investigation to identify candidates for safety replacement products.
Provide education, technical support and coaching for the Lift Team Program.
Investigate and recommend improvements to the array of back injury prevention devices in use at Baystate Health. Provide coaching to clinical departments to promote and increase the use of mechanical lifting devices where appropriate.
Provide coaching and technical guidance to employees seeking information about sharps and pharmaceutical disposal through established Baystate Health programs.
Participate in workplace investigations involving indoor air quality and other workplace exposures.
Author and submit grants funding requests for no less than $250,000 per year to support injury prevention activities at Baystate Health.
B.S./B.A. in a clinical or technical discipline required. RN/OT/PT/CPE/CHMM/CSP/CIH preferred.
2-5 years experience in ergonomics, healthcare injury prevention or safety required. Subject matter expertise in occupational injuries, ergonomic hazards, patient related transport and transfer injuries, sharps injuries, and successful grant writing/administration preferred.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills and ability to interact with all levels of staff in a multidisciplinary health care environment. Computer and excellent presentation skills necessary.
Valid drivers license required
