Transfer Policy

The Keene State College policy for the transfer of undergraduate credit may be found under Academic Policies on the Registrar's website.

Students earn credit toward graduation in a number of ways. They can take classes at Keene State, take classes at other institutions, earn credits for life experience, or take CLEP exams. Classes taken at other institutions must be transferred to a student's KSC transcript.

  • Current students submit official copies of their transcript to the Registrar's Office
  • Transfer students applying for admission submit transcripts to the Admissions Office

Evaluation

Academic and Career Advising evaluates post-secondary institution transcripts and other sources of external credit to determine;

  1. transferability of credit to Keene State College, and
  2. application of transfer credit to the student's academic program

Policy

Academic and Career Advising has been authorized to determine course equivalency for lower-level Integrative Studies and General Education eligible transfer courses and establish a standard equivalency database to include department chair-approved course substitutions via Datatel, the KSC student information system.

Transfer Courses

Transfer courses are evaluated in one of two ways:
  1. whether they are equivalent to a specific course at Keene State College (EX: PSYC 401, Introduction to Psychology, at UNH is specific to General Psychology, PSYC 101)
  2. whether they are accepted as general equivalencies (EX: PSYC 712 - Psychology of Language at UNH would be accepted as a PSYC 400-level general equivalency)

Conversion of Credits

Transfer credits are accepted at face value unless a conversion of credits is necessitated by a variation of academic calendar. For example, post-secondary institutions that follow a quarter-hour system would require quarter hours be converted to semester-hours (EX: 4-quarter hours equate to 2.68 semester-hours.) Four-credit courses taken at institutions on a semester system transfer to KSC as 4 credits.

Transfer Equivalency Report

Keene State College notifies matriculated students via their MyKSC account when their transfer credits have been accepted. Newly admitted transfer students are notified by U.S. mail. Faculty advisors and students can review the evaluation of transfer credits in one of three ways:

  1. students can log on to their MyKSC account
  2. faculty advisors can log on to their advisee's accounts via WebAdvisor
  3. students and advisors can review the Transfer Equivalency Report (TRER.) A paper copy of the student's TRER is on file in Academic and Career Advising. If a student presents a copy of the TRER, the left column of the report reflects the transfer course number, title, grade and credit/s earned. The right column reports how the course was accepted at KSC and reflects either a specific KSC course number (PSYC 101) or a discipline and level for a general equivalency (PSYC 400-level) and number of credits accepted.

Course Substitution

A Course Substitution form must be completed in order to apply credits accepted as general equivalencies toward major or minor degree requirements. The course substitution form requires approval from the appropriate Department Chair. To find the Department Chair in a specific major go to KSC Directory and select Chairs and Coordinators from the menu bar.

Recommendations
  • Anticipate how the transfer credit will be used in satisfying your degree requirements.
  • For major-specific requirements, please refer to the KSC Catalog and Program Planning Sheets.
  • Check with your faculty advisor regarding the potential for course substitution for a major or minor requirement before you take the course. Academic and Career Advising offers assistance with Integrative Studies and General Education questions.
  • Take electives rather than major requirements because elective credits transfer more readily (if a grade of "C" is earned).
  • Retain your course syllabus for future reference.
  • Remember - you are responsible for insuring that an official transcript be sent to KSC.

Questions regarding the transfer process may be directed to the Academic & Career Advising office.
